Recently the list of possible Belgian UCI Trade Teams was released by the belgian Federation. The requests have doubled compared to 2008. In the next week we'll highlight each team. Let's begin with the new kid on the block, Eliza - Orbea.
The second part of the name holds no mysteries. The mountain bike brand Orbea is home to the Olympic and multiple world champion Julien Absalon. The spokesmen of the team thinks of it as a great honor that this big brand wants to invest in the youth of the low countries.
The first part of the name comes from a Dutch brand that wants to expand into Belgium. Eliza, short for Eliza was here is an online travel agency. They sell vacations to special places under the sun away from the crowd, or to say it with their catchphrase: Where everyone goes right, Eliza goes left...

The team is managed by Jeroen Bosmans, the main riders are Mathias Haezebrouck, Bert Luca and Joris Garrein. The expectations for the first year are moderate, first priorities are establishing a professional team structure and gaining experience.
With this project Orbea wants to enhance their branding in the low countries and create a more global image. The fact that this also provides a nourishing ground to secure the succession of Julien Absalon is a nice bonus. |
