A mountain bike or cycle also abbreviated as MTB is a bicycle used for off road cycling purposes.

Featuring a full carbon monocoque frame and swingarm, the Whyte is a stiff and fast trail weapon, finely poised for gobbling up singletrack and making light work of climbs. First introduced in 2008, this was the first step into carbon fibre for the UK brand. Not new however is the tried and tested Quad-Link suspension design, which works supremely to smother even the smallest trail ripple with a nice degree of progressiveness as you reach deeper into the travel.

If the Spicy isn't enough bike for your type of riding, then there's a fairly high chance that the Froggy, the next bike up in the Lapierre range, is the one for you.

The Froggy gets 180mm of travel from the OST suspension setup and for 2011, as with the Spicy, it's a case of tweaks rather than any major redesigning.

Two bikes will be offered, the 518 with Fox 36 Van fork and single ring setup or the 218 with a RockShox Domain fork. Both frames share the new Syntace 12x142mm bolt-through axle for an stiffer swingarm.

Ellsworth Introduces New SST Frame Tubing

This year Ellsworth will debut SST tubing on their Truth, Evolve, Epiphany, and Moment frames and it looks like an interesting development. SST stands for “swagged, shaped, and tapered” (sounds like something from the Waffle House) and unlike hydroformed tubing, this method relies on hand shaping. According to Ellsworth, the advantages are plenty:

  • Enhanced clearances: Makes it easier to access adjustment knobs on the frame and decreases standover height.
  • Increased lateral stiffness: Bike is more responsive overall (acceleration, cornering, etc.)
  • Reduced weight: Places material only where it’s needed.

We’re interested to see how SST tubing looks up close and how it performs on the trail. Check out the diagram below to see how this works.
